How to Sponge Painting a Wall

Is your interior looking dull and boring? Well, if so, why not try something more creative than usual?

Sponge painting is a fun, quick way to full a space with character. And, it really is easy to do by yourself. Follow the tips below on sponge painting your wall – from start to finish, we’re here to help you through all the steps.

So, what’s the buzz about sponge painting?

Why people love sponge painting:

Let’s get started

1. Choosing colours

How many colours should you use? This depends on what type of effect you want to create:

  • One or two colours makes a room bold as it creates a more contrasted finish.
  • More colours create a subtle, cloudy effect.

Test your colour combinations on a small part of a wall or a piece of board to find the perfect colour. Just remember: to darken a room, you should choose a darker top coat; to lighten a room you should choose a darker base colour.

2. Apply a base colour

Paint the walls with a coat of the base paint using either a paint brush or a roller. Opt for a satin or matt paint. Once the walls are painted and dried, apply a second layer of the basecoat.

3. Make a mix

Mix 1 part top coat paint to 4 parts glaze. Stir together. The glaze will make the top coat more transparent.

4. Sponge the walls

Dip your sponge into the mixture of paint and glaze, wiping off any excess paint so that it doesn’t create any random drops and blobs of paint around the room.

Press the sponge against the wall lightly. You don’t have to do this uniformly. You can roll the sponge over the wall to create textured impressions. Continue this until the entire wall is covered. Replace the sponge when it becomes worn.
